P.S. Vipava river, second day of the season.

Autumn is very good period for fishing the common nase (Chondrostoma nasus). In Vipava river is very abundant specie and that is why is the targeted fish in fishing competitions. Times when I was a coarse competitor are far away, but occasionally I still take my equipment and compete. One of the competition that I will attend will took place on 16th of November on the Vipava competition track situated near village Rence. To get there with the right “set up” I spent a few days on the track to practice. I tried different mixtures of groundbait and different fishing techniques on different distances. I used a 7 meters long whip (rod without a reel) and a 5 meters bolognese rod and for bait I used a special type of bread that doesn´t fall off the hook so quickly. The weather was perfect and so was the fishing. All of the fishes were the common nase between 20 and 35 centimeters. I hope the fishes will be also so active in the competition. About the competition and results you will read in my next post.

Like always, the month of October is the best period for fishing graylings and trouts. Beautiful coloration of the surrounding nature combined with big feeding activity of the fishes, makes every fishing day unique! Yesterday made no difference.

I was fly-fishing in our catch&release part the whole afternoon with my father. Most of the catches were graylings with some rainbow trouts. The fishes were active on the bottom and on the surface, so I alternately used a nymph and a dry fly. Because the water was very clear I used a 0,12 tippet.

I suggest to visit Vipava in this period. Vou will not be dissapointed.

This year is really strange. It rains and rains and it doesn´t seem that it will stop. The average water level of Vipava river is twice as normal…

Last afternoon I decided to go fishing soon after a big storm ended. I went to Vipava catch&release part and had a really great time. The moisture was very high and I was quick all wet.  First I started with some nymph and had some bytes, but as it become darker the fishes started to rise very intensively. Small mayflies were the first to emerge, so I used F-fly. tied on hook #16. After this also caddis fly started to emerge so I tied some CDC elk tied on #14 hook, but the best was about to happen…  Huge number of big mayflies filled the air, the trees and the bushes all around the river. Fishes rose like crazy (even jumping out of the water) and it was like in a fairytale. I fished with big CDC mayflies on hook #10 and I caught almost all species that can be found in this salmonid part. Most of them were graylings.

Hello to all

Waiting for the new salmonid fishing season is now over. As on many rivers in Slovenia also on Vipava river the season starts on 1-st of April. Lack of snow on mountains caused lower water level as usual, but despite I am more into fly-fishing I decided to use a spinning rod. For this season a new regulation for salmonids started: only one single hook per lure/spinner; all to avoid greater damage in trouts mouth.

I started in early morning hoping to catch a big trout, but I wasn´t so lucky. I fished for no more than 4 hours and despite all I realized some catches and had a few bites. Some very nice trout also came back to my lure but didn´t attack it. After the fishing I met some colleagues and the fishing turn into some nice discussion about fishing experiences, lure modeling… I will have plenty of time to replace the “action” of the first day.

The fishing season for salmonids on Vipava river is now over. The fishes will finally get some peace from us till next 1.april.

On the last day of this season the water was a little higher than normal, but without any difference on fishes behaviour. They were rising on small mayflies, so I used my f-flies and had good results. I also tried on bigger nymphs and also had some fishes. Rainbow trout and grayling were “on the menu”, and all of them are still swimming in the river.

Autumn is without any doubt the best period for fishing graylings on Vipava river. They are aware that winter is coming so they don´t hesitate to bite the offered fly or nymph. If we add the beautiful colors of the nature that goes into deserved rest… As a flyfisherman I can´t expect more.

When the morning fog disappear and the sun rays touch the water, than the magic begins. Mayflies and sedges start to emerge and the fishes start to rise. The day with sunlight is shorter so the fishes are feeding with more intensity.

In this period I like to fish with f-flies in natural colorations tied on #16 hook. For nymphs I use bigger hooks, because they are not so careful as in summer.

The results are always good.
