Another long waiting for new flyfishing season is over. After months of rust in my elbow I finally stretched my flyfishing line. Like other years I went on river Rizana which opened on 1.st March and like most of fishing days I fished with my friend Martin. In comparison with last year opening this year the water level was perfect and gin clear.

Maybe we are starting to be “older” because we didn´t have that need to be in the water as soon as possible like we did have 10-15 years ago. After a good dose of talking and exchanging opinions about fishing we started to fish. We started under the spring and already the first fish was a pure beauty. After a quick release of a 45 cm long hybrid I started to think “how spectacular season would be if all the fishes would be like this first one”. And what followed? The second fish was a beautiful brown trout… My first thoughts took even more consideration.

How the time runs! Now it´s november and the fly fishing season 2014 is over. Now is the period for fish to regenerate their energy and focus for the spawn period.

My last day proved again that october is truly the best period for fly fishing. I fished only for few hours in the middle of the day when the sun was warmer. Huge amount of insects on the water surface looked like it was may and not october. Fishes were very active and even the water was very clear you could approach them to a few meters without scare them. To catch them I used a small brown nymph and an F fly. Rainbow trouts and graylings ended in my net and then again in the water when released…

See you next season.IMGP0629

For many fishermen the best period of the season is autumn. Most of the rivers in Slovenia are open till the end of october, some of them also in november. Mostly of them are an alpine tip of river with colder water, which is one of the parameters for fishes to begin the spawn. Maybe this is the reason why fly-fishing in october is more succesful. Fishes needs more energy to prepare the spawning time and are less careful to what they bite. Which fisherman don´t like the noon time when the sun is highest on the sky and graylings are most active on the surface? Pure romanticism! I had some experiences this october, that as soon as the sun shined the water, graylings started to rise.  As soon as they saw our flies, they have taken it immediately…

Now we are in november and my opinion is that the rivers should be closed from november on, but that don´t depend on me. The best thing that we can do is to give them peace… till the next season.

Here we are in june and the fishing season is opened for almost all of the salmonids (except the Danube salmon). The last one to open was the grayling (Thymallus thymallus). Some rivers are more abundant with grayling, and one of those is certainly Soca (Isonzo). Despite many other rivers who have less water the Soca river is still now higher and more turbid than normal. The main reason is the snow that is melting on the Julian Alps.

I decided to visit it to see if the fishes became active in this period. I started fishing upper the village Kobarid (Caporetto) near the confluence of river Boka and Soca. Here the water was very clear and you could see it´s inhabitants very far away. I tried under some rapids and caught some graylings with heavy nymphs. I also tried some streamers and dry-flies, but without success.

In the afternoon I moved to the “No kill” part, which was very crowded with fishermen. Here the water was turbid and higher and so was the fish activity. They were lying on the bottom and disinterested for the flies. I saw only 1 fish rising, and caught it with a dry-fly.

In my opinion I would recommend to visit the upper part of Soca river, because in lower part the fishes are not so active on the surface and in the mid-level. For those who prefer fishing with streamers the lower part would also be an option.
