The last visit on Sava Bohinjka has left a lot of positive thoughts how the fishing would be in autumn. Well our expectations couldn´t be more different from reality…

Water level was higher than in summer and for that reason we thought that the fishing day would be perfect. Combined with sunny weather…

The point of the day was that we really struggle to catch graylings (we focused our fishing to them), who weren´t even a little interested to take our flies. They were lying on the bed of the river, like they were glued to it. The gear we used was very long leader, with very thin tippet (we used 0,10 and also 0,10 fluorocarbon line) and flies tied on hooks #20, #22. We changed more than 20 flies and not even one fly didn´t catch more than 1 grayling (of those who were actually interested to take them).

I hope it will be easier next time.

Traditionally our second day of fishing is reserved for Sava Bohinjka.

After a short night we went to this beautiful river to see how has changed since our last visit. Water level was low that´s why the fishes were very cautious and diffident to our flies. We had more success in faster parts of the river on dry flies. The biggest impression was given by the grayling population, because we saw a lot of graylings bigger than 40 centimeters. We caught some of them during afternoon when they started to rise. They were interested on micro dry flies tied on hooks #20-24, with the terminal line of 0,10. They really made our day fantastic.

After this visit I can make a good advice: anybody who is interested to fish on Sava Bohinjka, now is the time to visit it!

After the Soca river this is the second most visited river in Slovenia. It flows in north – western part of  Slovenia in beautiful countryside. It is an alpine river which can be divided in 3 parts. Already the spring takes a breath away with an 78 meters Savica waterfall which bring a lot of tourist´s. After a few kilometers of fast rapids it flows into Bohinj lake which is also very crowded by tourist´s. After the lake the river became slower and wider. Toward the end of the course it flows in an very beautiful and hard reaching canyon. After it flows near by another well-known town and lake – Bled. Near the Village Radovljica it meet´s Sava Dolinka river and together flow on as Sava river.

For fishing it is interesting almost the whole year. In spring, summer and autumn it is possible to catch trout´s (rainbow, brown trout) and grayling´s in the Bohinj lake also arctic char and  lake trout – Salmo truta lacustris. In the winter the absolute king and the only fish opened for fishing is the huchen or Danube salmon – Hucho hucho. It grows more than a meter in length and 20 kilograms in weight.

Because of the water clearance is very easy to locate the fish, but on the other hand harder to catch it.
