Like always the second day of our Bled fly-fishing trip belong to Sava Bohinjka

The water level was extremely high for fly-fishing, but despite all the fishes managed that we had a really great day. Most of the day I used dry-flies tied with CDC. Until midday the sky was clear, but soon after it become cloudy and started to rain. It rained untill the night, but didn´t influenced the fish activity. It also become very cold so it was like in spring.

As the day went along the flies hatch changed almost every hour but we still managed to have the appropriate flies. As the night approached (with us being all wet) we decided that it was enough for that day…

P.S. We had a funny experience that day. We met a group of very peculiar italian fishermen (with the best equipment), have a few words. After that we sat on a river bank and had a break with Guerila wine and watched them being envious. What a laugh…

After a short night and delicious breakfast we went to Sava Bohinjka in the district managed by Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia. In the morning the weather was ideal for fly-fishing. Fishes were active on the surface and couldn´t resist our small cdc flies. There was a big swarm of red spinners but the fishes weren´t attracted to them. We caught graylings and rainbow trouts. In fact I was very surprised that the quantity of introduced rainbows was very low, and on the other side, the quantity of grayling much more than last year.

But like in all fairy tales, suddenly changed everything, because it started to rain and become windy. The surface activity ended and dry flies were replaced by nymphs. We decided to change position and also the rain was gone. On nymph I had at least 20 strikes, mostly of them were rainbow (all were about 20 centimeters), but also some grayling. I caught a big rainbow (it seemed natural) and as soon I had it in the net it started to rain again with more intensity. I waited under a bush till it ended and went to the others.

After that we went to the last position and had a chance to catch graylings on dry-fly and rainbows on nymph. And again it started to rain but this time we decided to finish our fly-fishing day and went back home.

I ´m fishing for several years now on Sava Bohinjka and I could say that the water is better now, because they don´t introduce rainbows anymore or is reduced to the minimum.

After the Soca river this is the second most visited river in Slovenia. It flows in north – western part of  Slovenia in beautiful countryside. It is an alpine river which can be divided in 3 parts. Already the spring takes a breath away with an 78 meters Savica waterfall which bring a lot of tourist´s. After a few kilometers of fast rapids it flows into Bohinj lake which is also very crowded by tourist´s. After the lake the river became slower and wider. Toward the end of the course it flows in an very beautiful and hard reaching canyon. After it flows near by another well-known town and lake – Bled. Near the Village Radovljica it meet´s Sava Dolinka river and together flow on as Sava river.

For fishing it is interesting almost the whole year. In spring, summer and autumn it is possible to catch trout´s (rainbow, brown trout) and grayling´s in the Bohinj lake also arctic char and  lake trout – Salmo truta lacustris. In the winter the absolute king and the only fish opened for fishing is the huchen or Danube salmon – Hucho hucho. It grows more than a meter in length and 20 kilograms in weight.

Because of the water clearance is very easy to locate the fish, but on the other hand harder to catch it.
