Do you imagine the day where every thing is against you or goes wrong? This happened to me last sunday on Vipava river.

It was a cloudy afternoon and I went to “catch and release” part. The water was a little higher than normal, clean and cold. Fishes were active on the surface and on the bottom. I started with a big nymph and had at least 5 bites but without any realisation. Than I changed to smaller nymph and the story repeated. Again I changed the nymph to even smaller size and realized one brown trout. Than I tried with a CDC dry-fly to catch any graylings who were rising, and yet the same story: byte without realisation… Like I was a rookie!!!

Under one bush I had a big wild rainbow on but it break the line and the day went “even better”. At the end of the fishing I catched two graylings and went back home.

I didn´t count how many bites I had that day, but I am sure it was more than 20, with only 3 fishes in my net. Let´s hope I will improve my score next time…

Hello everyone

In Slovenia 1. april means the start of fly fishing season on mostly all rivers. Like all years I spend this day on my Vipava river. This year I was skeptical about fishing quality because we didn´t have any considerate rain or snow and the water level was very low and the bottom was full of algae and moss. I started on sunrise and finished on midday. It was very windy and very cold and I was without a wind stopper (what a cold I have today)… Despite the cold weather I was warmed by fishes I caught. Rainbow, grayling, brown and marble trout were in my net in various number and were released as soon as possible. I tried to avoid to catch graylings, because they are now in spawning season.  I surprised some of them (one was longer than 45 cm) but I had one bite instead.

In one pool I had a fish of the day. A beautifull marble of 55 cm took my streamer and made my day complete. Full of adrenaline and memories I decided that was enough and went home.

Years ago it would be unthinkable not to start the fly-fishing season right on 1.april. But times are different and my first fly-fishing day was only on 9 of april.

I was waiting for this day since the middle of november for one reason only – testing my new bamboo fly-fishing rod. It´s a  line 4 rod which i made for small streams using light nymphs and dry flies. The d-day was planned to be on my river – Vipava.

The initial casts were lighter, just to feel the action and see the response. After the initial learning i started to improve the casts with more and more energy, till i reached my maximum power. I could say that i was surprised about the medium-fast action. Even if it´s not graphite i easily launched the line 20 meters and more.

First i used some nymphs on 10 an 12, after i tied some dry-flies because the fishes were rising. I caught some rainbows, and found a nice grayling (about 45 centimeters) dead on the bottom of the river.

In conclusion i was very excited about the results of my new bamboo rod, the fishes were not my primary goal.

This river is situated in central part of Slovenia. It is a small river with karstic characteristics. The main reason why i mention this river is it´s big grayling population. Here you can also find brown trout, rainbow trout and danube salmon. The river is relatively calm, with some rapids. Other characteristic of this river are red coloured stones, because of its specific chemical compounds.

Because of it´s size the best period for fishing is in spring with highier water level. Light gear, bamboo fly rods with small nymphs and dry flies are the best option for this river.

After the Soca river this is the second most visited river in Slovenia. It flows in north – western part of  Slovenia in beautiful countryside. It is an alpine river which can be divided in 3 parts. Already the spring takes a breath away with an 78 meters Savica waterfall which bring a lot of tourist´s. After a few kilometers of fast rapids it flows into Bohinj lake which is also very crowded by tourist´s. After the lake the river became slower and wider. Toward the end of the course it flows in an very beautiful and hard reaching canyon. After it flows near by another well-known town and lake – Bled. Near the Village Radovljica it meet´s Sava Dolinka river and together flow on as Sava river.

For fishing it is interesting almost the whole year. In spring, summer and autumn it is possible to catch trout´s (rainbow, brown trout) and grayling´s in the Bohinj lake also arctic char and  lake trout – Salmo truta lacustris. In the winter the absolute king and the only fish opened for fishing is the huchen or Danube salmon – Hucho hucho. It grows more than a meter in length and 20 kilograms in weight.

Because of the water clearance is very easy to locate the fish, but on the other hand harder to catch it.
