Hello everyone

Today I am writing about our fly-fishing day on Idrijca river.

Like always I was fishing with Martin, and that day we decided to visit the trophy part of Idrijca river, managed by Idrija Fishing Association.

The day was cloudy with some rain, but we managed to catch some very nice fish. We started using very small nymphs until the fishes started to rise, but instead of dry flies they were feeding with emergers. We watched their dorsal and caudal fins coming out of the water before we tied small emerger on our lines. The result was quick – beautiful browns, marbles and hybrids were soon on our lines and fighting for their freedom. Of course they were all released.

In the afternoon the activity wasn´t good as we expected but we also had some catches, with a big fat grayling of 51 cm on top of them. Martin spotted him on the bottom of a small pool and catched him with a small dry-fly. The battle was intense with some very high jumps out of the water. Like others it was released unharmed.

A trophy like that needed a toast… but that is off the record.

New fly-fishing season is here! Some Slovenian fishing associations have opened their rivers to fish salmonids on 1.march. Me and my friend Martin took advantage of this situation and went to river Rizana. This small river always prepare a surprise and no difference was this time.

Due heavy raining during the night, the water level raised 30 centimeters and so the water conditions were almost prohibited. The only good places to fish were under small dams and right after river curves, where the water swirled and slowed down it´s speed. We used heavy nymphs and streamers in bright colours. Despite bad conditions (we also had some rain periods) we realised some brown trout catches.

Despite all it was a good start of the season. Hope it will last till the end…

Autumn is without any doubt the best period for fishing graylings on Vipava river. They are aware that winter is coming so they don´t hesitate to bite the offered fly or nymph. If we add the beautiful colors of the nature that goes into deserved rest… As a flyfisherman I can´t expect more.

When the morning fog disappear and the sun rays touch the water, than the magic begins. Mayflies and sedges start to emerge and the fishes start to rise. The day with sunlight is shorter so the fishes are feeding with more intensity.

In this period I like to fish with f-flies in natural colorations tied on #16 hook. For nymphs I use bigger hooks, because they are not so careful as in summer.

The results are always good.

It all started in 2008, when I decided to go to Bled to have two-day fishing holidays (first day on Radovna and second on Sava Bohinjka). Of course it was a complete success.

Every year it happened the first weekend of August. No exception was this year. The only thing that changed since the first time was the number of colleagues that have gone with me. This year we were in seven! Maybe a little too much for a small stream like Radovna, but still manageable. Everybody had enough space to fish on every location we stopped.

We started at the beginning of the district. The water level was lower, crystal clear and cold (9 degrees centigrade). We saw a lot of trees in the riverbed (last autumn flood consequence) and less fishes as usual. But more we went downstream more were the catches. Small brownies were becoming more and more frequent on our nymphs.

With midday we changed position and with brownies we have caught also rainbows. Fishes became active on the surface, so nymphs were changed with dry-flies. Some cdc flies were irresistible to more and more fishes.

Hours run quickly and before night we moved to another position. The picture didn´t change, fishes were attacking our flies with  eagerness till we reached the end of the fishing district.

In conclusion I could say that in my point of view the river is 100% pure mind relax, with a lot of fishes and astonishing surroundings. What can a fisherman demand more?

Years ago it would be unthinkable not to start the fly-fishing season right on 1.april. But times are different and my first fly-fishing day was only on 9 of april.

I was waiting for this day since the middle of november for one reason only – testing my new bamboo fly-fishing rod. It´s a  line 4 rod which i made for small streams using light nymphs and dry flies. The d-day was planned to be on my river – Vipava.

The initial casts were lighter, just to feel the action and see the response. After the initial learning i started to improve the casts with more and more energy, till i reached my maximum power. I could say that i was surprised about the medium-fast action. Even if it´s not graphite i easily launched the line 20 meters and more.

First i used some nymphs on 10 an 12, after i tied some dry-flies because the fishes were rising. I caught some rainbows, and found a nice grayling (about 45 centimeters) dead on the bottom of the river.

In conclusion i was very excited about the results of my new bamboo rod, the fishes were not my primary goal.

This river is situated in central part of Slovenia. It is a small river with karstic characteristics. The main reason why i mention this river is it´s big grayling population. Here you can also find brown trout, rainbow trout and danube salmon. The river is relatively calm, with some rapids. Other characteristic of this river are red coloured stones, because of its specific chemical compounds.

Because of it´s size the best period for fishing is in spring with highier water level. Light gear, bamboo fly rods with small nymphs and dry flies are the best option for this river.
