Hot summer day with Idrijca river low took from me the maximum effort to catch some fishes. Most of them were graylings, whose population is much bigger than in spring. I don´t know where they came from, but I can say that everyone who want to catch monsters Idrijca is the right river to choose.

Best results were made with small dry mayflies on hook 18# before the dark. My biggest graylings were long 47, 48 and 49 cm. I hope that next time I will have the fortune to catch one with the magic length of 50.

Autumn is very good period for fishing the common nase (Chondrostoma nasus). In Vipava river is very abundant specie and that is why is the targeted fish in fishing competitions. Times when I was a coarse competitor are far away, but occasionally I still take my equipment and compete. One of the competition that I will attend will took place on 16th of November on the Vipava competition track situated near village Rence. To get there with the right “set up” I spent a few days on the track to practice. I tried different mixtures of groundbait and different fishing techniques on different distances. I used a 7 meters long whip (rod without a reel) and a 5 meters bolognese rod and for bait I used a special type of bread that doesn´t fall off the hook so quickly. The weather was perfect and so was the fishing. All of the fishes were the common nase between 20 and 35 centimeters. I hope the fishes will be also so active in the competition. About the competition and results you will read in my next post.

This year is really strange. It rains and rains and it doesn´t seem that it will stop. The average water level of Vipava river is twice as normal…

Last afternoon I decided to go fishing soon after a big storm ended. I went to Vipava catch&release part and had a really great time. The moisture was very high and I was quick all wet.  First I started with some nymph and had some bytes, but as it become darker the fishes started to rise very intensively. Small mayflies were the first to emerge, so I used F-fly. tied on hook #16. After this also caddis fly started to emerge so I tied some CDC elk tied on #14 hook, but the best was about to happen…  Huge number of big mayflies filled the air, the trees and the bushes all around the river. Fishes rose like crazy (even jumping out of the water) and it was like in a fairytale. I fished with big CDC mayflies on hook #10 and I caught almost all species that can be found in this salmonid part. Most of them were graylings.
