On the Vipava river there is a short part called “Hell”. It is a narrow path of the river, where was build a dam. The dam was made for the local mill and there was also the blacksmith. Maybe because of the lots of sparks that were flying outside the place received the name “Hell”. Now the dam is functional for small hydroelectric power plant. Downstream the area opens and the river is surrounded by vineyards.

The part is very recognized by fly fishermen, because fly fishing is the only technique allowed.

I was fishing here last sunday, and had a nice fishing.

All invited!

Hello everyone!

The fly-fishing season 2012 on some rivers already begun and i´m already counting down the days to the opening season on my Vipava river.

But in this period i will spend more time to make a new custom-made bamboo fly-fishing rod. It will be a 2 pieces, 7 feet, line 4 rod for dry flies and smaller nymphs. I will make a slightly different model as the “Sir Darryl” special made from Wayne Cattanach. Rod makers usually made 2 tippets, i will made only one.

First of all it is obligatory to cut the bamboo pole to several pieces and regulate their straightness with fire. Because the rod will have a hexagonal shape,  we will need six pieces for each part. The pieces must be planed in special stencils with a planer, to obtain a triangular shape. All six pieces put together will made its characteristic hexagonal shape. All this work requires a lot of time and patience.

To be continued…

For many fishermen the best period of the season is autumn. Most of the rivers in Slovenia are open till the end of october, some of them also in november. Mostly of them are an alpine tip of river with colder water, which is one of the parameters for fishes to begin the spawn. Maybe this is the reason why fly-fishing in october is more succesful. Fishes needs more energy to prepare the spawning time and are less careful to what they bite. Which fisherman don´t like the noon time when the sun is highest on the sky and graylings are most active on the surface? Pure romanticism! I had some experiences this october, that as soon as the sun shined the water, graylings started to rise.  As soon as they saw our flies, they have taken it immediately…

Now we are in november and my opinion is that the rivers should be closed from november on, but that don´t depend on me. The best thing that we can do is to give them peace… till the next season.

One thing is certain. Fly fishing is not only catching the fish. Yes, the feeling when a fish strikes a fly is unbelievable, but there is more, much more…

Maybe “more” is the reason why some foreign fisherman that come to fish in Slovenia stay astonished. One word: surroundings!

For those that lives in such places is more difficult to appreciate the nature the same as for those that come from abroad.

This happened in august when I took a foreign fisherman with me to enjoy one fishing day on Soca river. Despite the fishes weren´t so active we had a great day, and like he told me, the quantity is not important when fishing in such place. I agree with him.

After a short night and delicious breakfast we went to Sava Bohinjka in the district managed by Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia. In the morning the weather was ideal for fly-fishing. Fishes were active on the surface and couldn´t resist our small cdc flies. There was a big swarm of red spinners but the fishes weren´t attracted to them. We caught graylings and rainbow trouts. In fact I was very surprised that the quantity of introduced rainbows was very low, and on the other side, the quantity of grayling much more than last year.

But like in all fairy tales, suddenly changed everything, because it started to rain and become windy. The surface activity ended and dry flies were replaced by nymphs. We decided to change position and also the rain was gone. On nymph I had at least 20 strikes, mostly of them were rainbow (all were about 20 centimeters), but also some grayling. I caught a big rainbow (it seemed natural) and as soon I had it in the net it started to rain again with more intensity. I waited under a bush till it ended and went to the others.

After that we went to the last position and had a chance to catch graylings on dry-fly and rainbows on nymph. And again it started to rain but this time we decided to finish our fly-fishing day and went back home.

I ´m fishing for several years now on Sava Bohinjka and I could say that the water is better now, because they don´t introduce rainbows anymore or is reduced to the minimum.

Years ago it would be unthinkable not to start the fly-fishing season right on 1.april. But times are different and my first fly-fishing day was only on 9 of april.

I was waiting for this day since the middle of november for one reason only – testing my new bamboo fly-fishing rod. It´s a  line 4 rod which i made for small streams using light nymphs and dry flies. The d-day was planned to be on my river – Vipava.

The initial casts were lighter, just to feel the action and see the response. After the initial learning i started to improve the casts with more and more energy, till i reached my maximum power. I could say that i was surprised about the medium-fast action. Even if it´s not graphite i easily launched the line 20 meters and more.

First i used some nymphs on 10 an 12, after i tied some dry-flies because the fishes were rising. I caught some rainbows, and found a nice grayling (about 45 centimeters) dead on the bottom of the river.

In conclusion i was very excited about the results of my new bamboo rod, the fishes were not my primary goal.

The Reka river (Reka in Slovene means river) is situated in south-western part of Slovenia. It is a 50 kilometers long river with karstic features. It´s main characteristic is that disappears underground and has the longest (30 kilometers) underground path of all Slovenian rivers. After that it springs as the river Timavo in Italy, near village Duino between Trieste and Monfalcone and outflows in the gulf of Trieste.

The main attraction for fishermen is the native marble trout and brown trout, which is represented in large number. In small quantity also the rainbow trout is represented.

The only allowed technique is fly-fishing. The season starts from 1.march till 31.October. The best period for fishing is in spring.
