After some years I went to Unica river this September. Sunny day with low water first indicated that we would struggle to get a fish, but at the end of the day we counted more than 10 fishes per person. Most of the success came from dry flies tied on hooks 16-20#. We had more success in faster parts of the river where graylings weren´t so demanding. Trough the day I had some line breaks with decent fish on, and so was for Martin. He succeeded to catch a beautiful brown trout of 50 cm. Bigger graylings started to rise only before the dark, and some of them were caught and then released.

I hope to visit this magnificent river as soon as possible.

Hello everyone

Today I am writing about our fly-fishing day on Idrijca river.

Like always I was fishing with Martin, and that day we decided to visit the trophy part of Idrijca river, managed by Idrija Fishing Association.

The day was cloudy with some rain, but we managed to catch some very nice fish. We started using very small nymphs until the fishes started to rise, but instead of dry flies they were feeding with emergers. We watched their dorsal and caudal fins coming out of the water before we tied small emerger on our lines. The result was quick – beautiful browns, marbles and hybrids were soon on our lines and fighting for their freedom. Of course they were all released.

In the afternoon the activity wasn´t good as we expected but we also had some catches, with a big fat grayling of 51 cm on top of them. Martin spotted him on the bottom of a small pool and catched him with a small dry-fly. The battle was intense with some very high jumps out of the water. Like others it was released unharmed.

A trophy like that needed a toast… but that is off the record.

Hello everyone!
Here in Slovenia the fishing season is more and more influenced by the weather. We have a catastrophic dry season, which also results in low river water levels. In this period most of the fishermen would be in shadow drinking a cold beer – not me! Now is ideal to go fishing if you want to be alone and not to be bothered by others. For this reason we made a choice and went to river Unec, which is well-known for it´s grayling and brown trout. In this part of season is particularly hard to fish – ideal for extremists. Usage of long flourcarbon tippet with small flies is a necessity, slow approach to the water and long casts without any splashes on the surface are only half of success. Maybe even less.

Despite all, we had a good day of fishing.  Just to be in such a beautiful nature means a lot…

One thing is certain. Fly fishing is not only catching the fish. Yes, the feeling when a fish strikes a fly is unbelievable, but there is more, much more…

Maybe “more” is the reason why some foreign fisherman that come to fish in Slovenia stay astonished. One word: surroundings!

For those that lives in such places is more difficult to appreciate the nature the same as for those that come from abroad.

This happened in august when I took a foreign fisherman with me to enjoy one fishing day on Soca river. Despite the fishes weren´t so active we had a great day, and like he told me, the quantity is not important when fishing in such place. I agree with him.

It all started in 2008, when I decided to go to Bled to have two-day fishing holidays (first day on Radovna and second on Sava Bohinjka). Of course it was a complete success.

Every year it happened the first weekend of August. No exception was this year. The only thing that changed since the first time was the number of colleagues that have gone with me. This year we were in seven! Maybe a little too much for a small stream like Radovna, but still manageable. Everybody had enough space to fish on every location we stopped.

We started at the beginning of the district. The water level was lower, crystal clear and cold (9 degrees centigrade). We saw a lot of trees in the riverbed (last autumn flood consequence) and less fishes as usual. But more we went downstream more were the catches. Small brownies were becoming more and more frequent on our nymphs.

With midday we changed position and with brownies we have caught also rainbows. Fishes became active on the surface, so nymphs were changed with dry-flies. Some cdc flies were irresistible to more and more fishes.

Hours run quickly and before night we moved to another position. The picture didn´t change, fishes were attacking our flies with  eagerness till we reached the end of the fishing district.

In conclusion I could say that in my point of view the river is 100% pure mind relax, with a lot of fishes and astonishing surroundings. What can a fisherman demand more?

To every fisherman happened that gone fishing was just an excuse to go into the nature, to calm down from everyday´s fast way of life, to recharge the batteries… and the fishes weren´t the goal. One time happened to me and then I realized how important this kind of thinking is.

Like in all capitalistic countries, we are bombarded with every kind of commercials in all media (written, spoken…), which caused less patience and satisfaction. Now we must have all and now. Why? Is really that necessary? All I can say is that if we care about us and others, we should be more patient and less greedy.

The same is in fishing. I don´t need to fish all day, trying to catch my 15-th fish. Just 1 hour could be enough.

We must observe the nature, feel it and not just use it.

Less is more.

This small alpine river is situated on the western part of Slovenia and flows into Idrijca river. The river made it´s course through a small valley which is, in some parts, large only few meters. It´s 20 kilometers long stream could be divided into two parts. The lower part is wider and easier to fish. Fishes that lives it this part are marble trout, hybrids, grayling and rainbow trout. Because of it´s easier access this part is more frequented by fishermen despite the upper part.

The opposite of the lower is the upper part. This part is more time-consuming to reach and harder to fish, because the river is smaller and fishes more prudent and escape as soon they see intruders. But for those who like the challenge to fish with long casts and be hidden as possible in a small space, this part is ideal. The result will not fail to come, because the fishes are more interested into biting the flies!

On both parts only fly fishing is allowed.
