It was the beginning of July when I visited the Unec river. In normal conditions the weather would be sunny and very hot. Well, this year, the weather made many surprises, and that day was no exception. All day was cloudy, windy with some raining in the middle – it was like English weather in the spring. Combined with cold water and fishing with less moving along the river brought to very cold feet and hands. Not really a nice feeling in the middle of the summer.

Anyway the fish activity was uneven through the day. Mostly of fishes (mostly graylings) were catched on dry-flies. I also tried with a streamer and had some brown trouts.

Let wait till autumn to try again.

It all started in 2008, when I decided to go to Bled to have two-day fishing holidays (first day on Radovna and second on Sava Bohinjka). Of course it was a complete success.

Every year it happened the first weekend of August. No exception was this year. The only thing that changed since the first time was the number of colleagues that have gone with me. This year we were in seven! Maybe a little too much for a small stream like Radovna, but still manageable. Everybody had enough space to fish on every location we stopped.

We started at the beginning of the district. The water level was lower, crystal clear and cold (9 degrees centigrade). We saw a lot of trees in the riverbed (last autumn flood consequence) and less fishes as usual. But more we went downstream more were the catches. Small brownies were becoming more and more frequent on our nymphs.

With midday we changed position and with brownies we have caught also rainbows. Fishes became active on the surface, so nymphs were changed with dry-flies. Some cdc flies were irresistible to more and more fishes.

Hours run quickly and before night we moved to another position. The picture didn´t change, fishes were attacking our flies with  eagerness till we reached the end of the fishing district.

In conclusion I could say that in my point of view the river is 100% pure mind relax, with a lot of fishes and astonishing surroundings. What can a fisherman demand more?

Years ago it would be unthinkable not to start the fly-fishing season right on 1.april. But times are different and my first fly-fishing day was only on 9 of april.

I was waiting for this day since the middle of november for one reason only – testing my new bamboo fly-fishing rod. It´s a  line 4 rod which i made for small streams using light nymphs and dry flies. The d-day was planned to be on my river – Vipava.

The initial casts were lighter, just to feel the action and see the response. After the initial learning i started to improve the casts with more and more energy, till i reached my maximum power. I could say that i was surprised about the medium-fast action. Even if it´s not graphite i easily launched the line 20 meters and more.

First i used some nymphs on 10 an 12, after i tied some dry-flies because the fishes were rising. I caught some rainbows, and found a nice grayling (about 45 centimeters) dead on the bottom of the river.

In conclusion i was very excited about the results of my new bamboo rod, the fishes were not my primary goal.
