The last visit on Sava Bohinjka has left a lot of positive thoughts how the fishing would be in autumn. Well our expectations couldn´t be more different from reality…

Water level was higher than in summer and for that reason we thought that the fishing day would be perfect. Combined with sunny weather…

The point of the day was that we really struggle to catch graylings (we focused our fishing to them), who weren´t even a little interested to take our flies. They were lying on the bed of the river, like they were glued to it. The gear we used was very long leader, with very thin tippet (we used 0,10 and also 0,10 fluorocarbon line) and flies tied on hooks #20, #22. We changed more than 20 flies and not even one fly didn´t catch more than 1 grayling (of those who were actually interested to take them).

I hope it will be easier next time.

This event is organised by Rence Fishing Association in middle of November every year, and that is why is called after St. Martin. This years rain really makes a lot of problems for fishing events and no difference was this time. Because of high water it was skipped two weeks successively.

Finally it was managed this sunday in beautiful autumn sunny weather. We were 27 competitors arranged in 9 teams. The water level was a little higher and a little turbid than usually…

We were distributed in 3 sectors composed of one fisherman per team. The competition started at 10 in the morning, we were there two hour before to prepare our equipment, groundbait, bait etc. We started to feed with groundbait and maggots 5 minutes before the start. And then it started…

I mainly used my 7 meters Daiwa pole, with some minutes with 5 meters Ignesti Magnum bolognese rod. I had a lot of bites and a lot of them ended with a catch.

The competition lasted 4 hours and it was extremely successful. My goal was to beat my record of 7 kilograms and I did it, with 8,880 kilograms of Common Nase. I reached 6 place in my sector. The thing that made me a little disappointed was that I mainly catched equal number or even more than the others, but the fishes were smaller despite of others who had bigger ones (the best result was 22 kilograms!!!). I still don´t have the answer to that, I hope that I will have it when I will analyze all more clearly.

Now I can only say that I hope that next year will be better and with more competitors. See you next year on St. Martin´s competition! Everyone invited.

Autumn is very good period for fishing the common nase (Chondrostoma nasus). In Vipava river is very abundant specie and that is why is the targeted fish in fishing competitions. Times when I was a coarse competitor are far away, but occasionally I still take my equipment and compete. One of the competition that I will attend will took place on 16th of November on the Vipava competition track situated near village Rence. To get there with the right “set up” I spent a few days on the track to practice. I tried different mixtures of groundbait and different fishing techniques on different distances. I used a 7 meters long whip (rod without a reel) and a 5 meters bolognese rod and for bait I used a special type of bread that doesn´t fall off the hook so quickly. The weather was perfect and so was the fishing. All of the fishes were the common nase between 20 and 35 centimeters. I hope the fishes will be also so active in the competition. About the competition and results you will read in my next post.

For many fishermen the best period of the season is autumn. Most of the rivers in Slovenia are open till the end of october, some of them also in november. Mostly of them are an alpine tip of river with colder water, which is one of the parameters for fishes to begin the spawn. Maybe this is the reason why fly-fishing in october is more succesful. Fishes needs more energy to prepare the spawning time and are less careful to what they bite. Which fisherman don´t like the noon time when the sun is highest on the sky and graylings are most active on the surface? Pure romanticism! I had some experiences this october, that as soon as the sun shined the water, graylings started to rise.  As soon as they saw our flies, they have taken it immediately…

Now we are in november and my opinion is that the rivers should be closed from november on, but that don´t depend on me. The best thing that we can do is to give them peace… till the next season.

This river is situated in south-eastern part of Slovenia and represent a border between Slovenia and Croatia. It originates in Croatia and soon becomes a 117 kilometers long natural border between those two countries.

It is known as one of the cleanest and intact rivers in Slovenia. In summer becomes warm enough to swim and other water activities.

For fisherman´s is well-known for it´s big fish variety. In upper part it´s mostly salmonid river with huge grayling population which represent the biggest attraction during the season. In winter months the undiscussed king becomes the Danube salmon or huchen, which grows over 15 kilograms.

I would recommend to visit this river in spring and autumn, when you can fish in peace, with no one that bothers.

For those who like fly-fishing for grayling, this river really means one of the best choices. This is also meant for spinning for Danube salmon.

After the Soca river this is the second most visited river in Slovenia. It flows in north – western part of  Slovenia in beautiful countryside. It is an alpine river which can be divided in 3 parts. Already the spring takes a breath away with an 78 meters Savica waterfall which bring a lot of tourist´s. After a few kilometers of fast rapids it flows into Bohinj lake which is also very crowded by tourist´s. After the lake the river became slower and wider. Toward the end of the course it flows in an very beautiful and hard reaching canyon. After it flows near by another well-known town and lake – Bled. Near the Village Radovljica it meet´s Sava Dolinka river and together flow on as Sava river.

For fishing it is interesting almost the whole year. In spring, summer and autumn it is possible to catch trout´s (rainbow, brown trout) and grayling´s in the Bohinj lake also arctic char and  lake trout – Salmo truta lacustris. In the winter the absolute king and the only fish opened for fishing is the huchen or Danube salmon – Hucho hucho. It grows more than a meter in length and 20 kilograms in weight.

Because of the water clearance is very easy to locate the fish, but on the other hand harder to catch it.

Now is time to talk about the lower part of Vipava river.

The main difference between the upper part is that here the river is wider , slower and deeper. For this reasons the main fish population consists of cyprinid species. Here you can find chub, common barbel, common nase, pike, carp, tench, eel and  wels catfish. The Vipava river is known for it´s large population of common nase, but in particular for it´s huge wels catfish. This fish was introduced in the past sixties and displaced some indigenous species such as wild carp, eel, tench and chub. Because of it´s lenght and weight attracts more and more fishermen.  The Vipava river has a record of 220 centimeters and 76 kilograms. I can tell that some fishermen had bigger exemplars but they were powerless (broken rods, reels, hooks). The best technique is spinning with very heavy gear and big lures.

Not only wels catfish, but also fishing for carp is considered to be very attractive, because this carp is considered to be one of the most powerful fish in this region. A lot of fishermen told that here a fight with a 10 kilogram carp is like a carp of at least 15 kilograms in other rivers or lakes. If I add a fact that this part of the river is overgrown with a lot of underwater vegetation you can imagine the satisfaction of a catch. They are still fished in “old school” way (with corn, cornmeal and bread) with very good results.

Because of it´s underwater vegetation you can also catch beautiful pikes, especially in autumn.

The common nase is active during the whole year, with a peak in autumn.

This carp was fished with an 0,18 leader.

This wels catfish was caught this october (205 centimeters, 50 kilograms).
