Traditionally our second day of fishing is reserved for Sava Bohinjka.

After a short night we went to this beautiful river to see how has changed since our last visit. Water level was low that´s why the fishes were very cautious and diffident to our flies. We had more success in faster parts of the river on dry flies. The biggest impression was given by the grayling population, because we saw a lot of graylings bigger than 40 centimeters. We caught some of them during afternoon when they started to rise. They were interested on micro dry flies tied on hooks #20-24, with the terminal line of 0,10. They really made our day fantastic.

After this visit I can make a good advice: anybody who is interested to fish on Sava Bohinjka, now is the time to visit it!

Hello everyone!

Yes, yes I am still breathing…

One year passes very quickly and here is the report of two days of fly-fishing in Bled.

Like always, with my friend Martin, the trip started on the upper part of Radovna river. The water level was lower than in the last two years, but we still had a great day. We fished upwards with different dry flies, but had most success with caddis flies tied with deer fur on hook 10-12#.

We had a curious situation when Martin accidentally caught a grass snake (Natrix natrix), but he managed to release her without harm.

In the afternoon we moved toward the vintgar gorge and finished before the sunset.

The beauty and the quietness of the Radovna valley impresses me every single year and I hope for many more.

My new role of being a parent took several changes and one of them was less time spent in fishing. Like years before me and Martin went to Bled for two day fishing trip. We started on Radovna river, most of the day on the upper “wild” part and had a really great day. Even if the weather was cloudy with some rain we used dry flies (mostly mayflies) on 14-16 #. The conclusion of the day was that, in general, the fishes were bigger than in other years, thats why we made a toast to the great day. Cheers!

Another long waiting for new flyfishing season is over. After months of rust in my elbow I finally stretched my flyfishing line. Like other years I went on river Rizana which opened on 1.st March and like most of fishing days I fished with my friend Martin. In comparison with last year opening this year the water level was perfect and gin clear.

Maybe we are starting to be “older” because we didn´t have that need to be in the water as soon as possible like we did have 10-15 years ago. After a good dose of talking and exchanging opinions about fishing we started to fish. We started under the spring and already the first fish was a pure beauty. After a quick release of a 45 cm long hybrid I started to think “how spectacular season would be if all the fishes would be like this first one”. And what followed? The second fish was a beautiful brown trout… My first thoughts took even more consideration.

This event is organised by Rence Fishing Association in middle of November every year, and that is why is called after St. Martin. This years rain really makes a lot of problems for fishing events and no difference was this time. Because of high water it was skipped two weeks successively.

Finally it was managed this sunday in beautiful autumn sunny weather. We were 27 competitors arranged in 9 teams. The water level was a little higher and a little turbid than usually…

We were distributed in 3 sectors composed of one fisherman per team. The competition started at 10 in the morning, we were there two hour before to prepare our equipment, groundbait, bait etc. We started to feed with groundbait and maggots 5 minutes before the start. And then it started…

I mainly used my 7 meters Daiwa pole, with some minutes with 5 meters Ignesti Magnum bolognese rod. I had a lot of bites and a lot of them ended with a catch.

The competition lasted 4 hours and it was extremely successful. My goal was to beat my record of 7 kilograms and I did it, with 8,880 kilograms of Common Nase. I reached 6 place in my sector. The thing that made me a little disappointed was that I mainly catched equal number or even more than the others, but the fishes were smaller despite of others who had bigger ones (the best result was 22 kilograms!!!). I still don´t have the answer to that, I hope that I will have it when I will analyze all more clearly.

Now I can only say that I hope that next year will be better and with more competitors. See you next year on St. Martin´s competition! Everyone invited.

Training days

Autumn is very good period for fishing the common nase (Chondrostoma nasus). In Vipava river is very abundant specie and that is why is the targeted fish in fishing competitions. Times when I was a coarse competitor are far away, but occasionally I still take my equipment and compete. One of the competition that I will attend will took place on 16th of November on the Vipava competition track situated near village Rence. To get there with the right “set up” I spent a few days on the track to practice. I tried different mixtures of groundbait and different fishing techniques on different distances. I used a 7 meters long whip (rod without a reel) and a 5 meters bolognese rod and for bait I used a special type of bread that doesn´t fall off the hook so quickly. The weather was perfect and so was the fishing. All of the fishes were the common nase between 20 and 35 centimeters. I hope the fishes will be also so active in the competition. About the competition and results you will read in my next post.

How the time runs! Now it´s november and the fly fishing season 2014 is over. Now is the period for fish to regenerate their energy and focus for the spawn period.

My last day proved again that october is truly the best period for fly fishing. I fished only for few hours in the middle of the day when the sun was warmer. Huge amount of insects on the water surface looked like it was may and not october. Fishes were very active and even the water was very clear you could approach them to a few meters without scare them. To catch them I used a small brown nymph and an F fly. Rainbow trouts and graylings ended in my net and then again in the water when released…

See you next season.IMGP0629
