On second day of my trip to Bled I experienced same heavy grayling activity on the surface, but finding the right fly was very hard. They were feeding with small mayflies through the whole day so I didn´t take much attention to nymphs. In the evening they started to feed with bigger mayflies and then the pure drill begun. The biggest impression made when I caught a big grayling under heavy rain on dry fly. It was amazing!

Our Austrian friend Peter invited us to come fishing on river Gail and Gailitz near village Arnoldstein. The plan was to fish for danube salmon (Hucho hucho) with spinning and flyfishing for grayling. I must say that this was my first fishing experience in Austria so I was quite optimistic.

The part we fished is closed for tourists, so the only option for fishing is that you get invited from local fishermen.

The river Gail is like our Sava Bohinjka and the Gailitz (runs into Gail) like Baca on the lower part.

On the Gail we started with spinning and soon my optimism was paid off. I had a bite under one bridge and soon my first Danube salmon was in my hands. The measure showed 78 cm. It wasn´t a trophy but still very nice and like they say: “The first one you will never forget”.

As the hours passed by we didn´t have anymore bites, so we decided to go on Gailitz for some grayling. There we had some nice graylings that were caught on dry fly. Before it went dark we returned to Gail for some more spinning, but we didn´t catch nothing more.

I´ve caught my first danube salmon, so now I can focus to catch a bigger one…

After a long period of time I decided to go to the middle part of lake Vogrscek. With my 5 meters long Bolognese rod and a can of sweet corn I fished there for a few hours. I used very light equipment with 3 gram floater and had a very nice afternoon. Mostly of the catches were bream, with some gardons and chubs.

Like I said in the previous post “Let´s hope it will be better next time”…

This is what happened last sunday. I was in the same part of river Vipava, but this time with much more success. Fishes were extremely active on the surface, and with a small F-fly I had very good results. I tried with a streamer and also had success. It looked like all bad luck I had 14 days ago turned into good…

The number of grayling is rising and next year they will grow more! I really hope they will have good conditions in spawn season.

The construction of the new rod is in it´s critical phase. Now it must be planed into the final cone form. Before planing the rod must by dry, and for this reason must be dried in a “rod oven” on 190 degrees celsius for 20 minutes. With drying it becomes stronger and more resistant in time.

Once it is dry, it should be planed into the final form as soon as possible and glue together, so that doesn´t accumulate humidity.

For this operation we need a special stencil on wich we can regulate the depth of the strip. This operation is very time-consuming and requires patience and a very sharp planer. After this phase is done we can glue the strips together into the final hexagonal shape.  But that will be explained in the next post…

Yesterday was my first 2011 visit to river Idrijca.

It was very hot and the water level was low.  You could see the fishes from a long distance, but  they were very cautious, and soon when you tried to approached them they run away.

I was not alone. I was with my friend Martin, who has a nose for fishing in this kind of situation. Most of the fishes were caught in the rapids. Grayling was caught on small dry fly, meanwhile trout on nymph and streamer.

It still would be a great fishing day, if the fish on the last two pictures would not strike at the end of the day. It sure made our fishing day unforgettable!

One thing is sure – Idrijca never disappoints!

I think this is enough speaking, let the pictures talk.

This lake is situated in western part of Slovenia, only a few kilometers from Italy. It was made for irrigation of many fields in Vipava valley, and it has an area of 82 hectares.

The lake is well-known for it´s very strong carp which attract more and more fishermen. Those carp are considered to be the strongest in this part of Europe. In combination with overgrown bottom of the lake, this is truly extreme fishing. Many line breaks are considered to be normal!

For those who like spinning, this lake also offer a lot of choices. Pike, zander, perch and largemouth bass can offer big time almost the whole year, but the best results can be achieved in late spring and autumn.
